Repair

AC repair

Diagnosis for an air conditioner that is not keeping the house comfortable, followed by a repair only after the work is agreed.

What a repair request is for

AC repair, sometimes searched as AC repair services, home AC repair, or AC unit repair, is for equipment that is already installed and no longer behaving as it should. Central AC repair and ductless AC repair are both in that category. The system type changes the parts that get inspected. It does not change the order of the work: understand the symptom, confirm the cause, then agree on the repair.

This page is about cooling. It is not a furnace-repair page, even though some national searches mix heating and AC repair together. If a heat pump is failing to cool, describe the cooling problem. Heating-only service is not offered as its own category here.

A repair visit is not automatically the right answer for a very old system. When diagnosis shows that replacement is the sounder path, that recommendation is made with the reasons attached. The choice stays with you. See air conditioning replacement for the signs that point that way.

When the system is not cooling

An air conditioner that runs without lowering the temperature is the most common reason people ask for help in a Florida summer. The cause is not one thing. A dirty filter, a failed capacitor, a thermostat set to the wrong mode, a frozen coil, a refrigerant problem, or an outdoor unit that cannot reject heat can look similar from the hallway: the fan is on, and the room is warm.

Write down what you notice before the request. Does the outdoor unit run? Is air coming from the vents? Is that air cool, room-temperature, or warm? Did the problem start after a storm, a filter change, or a thermostat replacement? Those details do not replace diagnosis. They stop the first reply from guessing.

If the indoor coil is frozen, turn the cooling off and let it thaw. Running it harder rarely helps. If you smell burning or see smoke, leave the equipment alone and contact the fire department. This website is not an emergency dispatch service. For cooling failures that feel urgent but are not a fire, use the emergency AC repair request and read the safety notes on that page.

Airflow

Weak airflow is its own complaint, even when the air that does arrive is cool. Closed vents, a clogged filter, a slipping blower, collapsed flex duct, or a coil packed with dirt can all starve a room. In a humid climate, poor airflow also makes it harder for the coil to manage moisture, so the house can feel clammy at a temperature that looks acceptable on the thermostat.

Check the filter before you send a request if you can do it safely. A filter is ordinary maintenance, and it is also a frequent reason a system struggles. If a new filter does not change the vents, say so. Do not open the cabinet of the air handler or the electrical compartment.

Duct leakage and attic heat are common in Florida houses. A repair visit can note obvious duct problems. Rebuilding a duct system is a separate scope. It is proposed only when it is actually needed, and only with its own agreement.

Noise

New sounds are worth describing rather than imitating in the form with a single word. A rattle at the outdoor unit can be debris or a loose panel. A screech from the indoor blower can be a motor or a wheel. A buzz can be electrical, and electrical noise should be treated with caution: if a breaker trips repeatedly, leave it off and say that in the request. A hiss, by itself, is not proof of a refrigerant leak. It is a clue.

Grinding or a compressor that tries to start and then stops needs diagnosis. AC compressor repair is sometimes the right job and sometimes the wrong one, because the compressor may be responding to another failure, or the system may be at the end of its life. That call is made after the equipment is tested, and the cost is agreed before parts are changed. Nothing on this page promises a compressor replacement.

Thermostat trouble

A thermostat can be the whole problem or a bystander. Blank screens, schedules that fight the household, sensors in direct sun, and settings left on “fan” instead of “cool” all produce complaints that sound like a failed air conditioner. The check is simple once someone is there: compare the control with what the equipment is actually doing.

If you recently replaced the thermostat and the system has misbehaved since, say that. Wiring mistakes are a known cause, and they are easier to find when the history is included.

How diagnosis works

The reply to your request confirms the symptoms and the access. A diagnostic visit is then scheduled only if both sides agree. On site, the technician confirms power and the control signal, looks at airflow and the filter, checks the indoor and outdoor equipment for obvious failure, and measures the temperatures and electrical values the situation calls for. Refrigerant is discussed from measurements, not from a glance.

You should leave the visit knowing the likely cause, what is still uncertain, and which options exist. One option can be “no repair today.” Another can be a small correction. Another can be a proposal to replace the system. The visit itself is not permission to start the expensive option.

Agreeing to the repair

Once the cause is clear enough to price, the repair is described in ordinary language: the part or the task, why it addresses the symptom, and what it will cost. Work starts after you agree. If a second problem appears after the first repair, that is a new conversation, not an open-ended approval.

AC repair cost varies with the part, the refrigerant situation, access, and the time on site. A published flat number would be fiction for most of those cases, so this site does not print one. Urgent requests are not given a special public price either.

Questions

Should I keep the system running if it is not cooling?

If it is blowing warm air or the coil is frozen, set it to off and run the fan only if that helps you move air without cooling. If a breaker trips, leave the breaker off. Continued running can turn a small fault into a damaged compressor.

Can you repair a ductless system?

Ductless AC repair can be requested. Include how many indoor heads you have and which rooms are affected. The diagnostic order is the same as for a central system.

What if the repair costs almost as much as a new system?

You will be told when that is the case, with the age and the condition of the equipment in the explanation. Replacement is an option at that point, not a requirement invented by the website.

Is a repair guaranteed to be same-day?

No. Timing depends on scheduling, parts, and the severity of the symptom. The reply after your request is where timing is discussed. Nothing on this page guarantees a same-day visit.
